Getting Lost in our Books!

This first week we are building our reading life and working towards our third grade goal of 40 minutes of uninterrupted adventures in "just right" books!  We also are celebrating and sharing the good books we finish and enjoy to help others find new favorites and revisit enjoyable classics!  Let's all get lost in our books!

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
― George R.R. Martin

After spending some time building reading stamina and working on getting lost in our books and walking in our character's shoes, I now am asking them to use my favorite teaching tool, sticky notes, to track their thinking about the text.  Sticky notes are a great way to mark and comment on our journey through the text, capturing reactions, questions, thoughts and connections.  These then become the key to monitoring our comprehension as we read (and sometimes reread) harder and more complicated stories.  They also allow us to compare our predictions and reactions to the text with what actually happens along with directing our focus to specific details through "I wonder..." and questions.
